I have a blog and more active website located at:

http://iculearn.com/wp/

I will be closing this site in another month or two.

Welcome to a web site that is gradually be developed for teaching and learning online or in the classroom using Web 2.0 technologies.

I have found a widget that makes it very simple to add the code to Blackboard.  Go to the blog for this website to see it.

BLACKBOARD WORLD 09

As new Internet technologies evolve, our students are also learning and using the new tools to communicate and share with others. As you go through this site, you will see many Web 2.0 tools in use. Follow the links to the web sited join. I did not pay for these and have the basic options. Think of ways that you can use them to help your students learn. Or...how can they use them for an educational activity?

Faculty may not have realized that there was even a Web 1.0 and here we are talking about a Web 2.0. How can we help instructors learn what they need to communicate with their students? What is Web 2.0?

Web 1.0 was the web of the 1990's and early 2000's. The ability to share, collaborate and communicate interactively was limited. Web 2.0 is just the web maturing. There are many definitions of Web 2.0 but all you need to know is that this is the structure of the web that now allows sharing, collaboration in real time. The content is dynamic and global interaction can happen instantaneously.

Some of the terms you will hear that indicate a web 2.0 technology includes:

  • Mashups- not like mashed potatoes!!! but it is the merging of multiple sources of web content and this could be all in one page.
  • Podcasting! This term you probably have heard as it has been around for a while. It is now EASY to do this with the web 2.0 tools that almost do the work for you. There are so many websites, that it is hard to keep up with them. New developers keep putting up web sites that allow you to podcast and they will host it for you.
  • RSS- Real Simple Syndication! This is the first topic I will be presenting about on this web site. Many of the tools we have discussed use RSS. I think RSS is a primary tool of Web 2.0 technologies that permits sharing and collaboration to happen. This is also the topic I am co-presenting on at the Blackboard World 09 conference in Washington, DC.
  • Feed reader, news reader- software or web-based tool that manages your RSS feeds. This is included in the tutorial on RSS on this web site and at the Blackboard Conference 09.
  • Social bookmarking and networks: Facebook and MySpace, Twitter are very common examples that our students are using all the time. These have correct ways to use them- and incorrect. There are good reasons to use these in education. I plan to present on these tools on this site too. I have links to my sites on these social networks on this web site.
  • Tags, tagging or the real term = Folksonomy. Using tags, you can categorize and classify websites and information. Using keywords, you can classify and then organize your sites based on these tags.
  • Webblog or Blog- These are almost like journals but open to the public. The author posts content and comments are usually allowed. They have a RSS feed associated with them and can be collected with your feedreaders. Some blogs are like diaries and some are on specific topics. There is a blog on this web site that will be updated soon.
  • Vlog: = video blog. This is the video content rather than audio. Video podcasting is also called vodcasting.
  • Wiki- wikis allow everyone to contribute and edit in a collaborative environment from a community of users.
  • YouTube: a web site that hosts movies with audio and video. Users (anyone) can submit and upload. Anyone can embed these into their websites or blogs. In fact, the tutorial on RSS has a few videos from there as they explain it better!
